Did you know Canada has 13.3 million volunteers? The Right Honorable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, calls Canada a smart and caring nation. “It’s our dedication to community involvement that has given us that reputation at home and around the globe.”

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society is celebrating this spirit of giving with National Volunteer Week April 6 through 12, 2014.

Volunteerism strengthens our community, makes our country vibrant, and plays a vital role in healthy aging. Remaining active and staying connected to the community can have a big positive impact on a person’s social, physical and emotional well-being. Studies have found that older adults who volunteer have reduced stress-related illnesses, higher self-esteem, and are less likely to feel isolated. Volunteering can also have positive impact on lifestyle transitions in older adults as they retire and deal with health issues. According to Statistics Canada, Canada’s senior’s volunteer an average of 223 hours each year, more than any other age group. They are an extremely important demographic to Canada’s volunteer sector.

The contribution volunteers make to the Women’s Centre is lasting and profound. Whether you are a volunteer that has offered support to a woman in need, helped with our many fundraising events throughout the year, or worked tirelessly in our enterprising non-profit store Pearl’s Value & Vintage, we THANK YOU for your hard work and dedication to enriching the lives of women and children in our community.

Our volunteers at Pearls Value & Vintage bring an invaluable service to the store. Some have volunteered as long as 5 years, and bring years of experience and knowledge. The store could not run as efficiently as it does without all the time and effort our volunteers put in. To celebrate the efforts of our Pearl’s Value & Vintage volunteers, we will be hosting a sit down dinner with all the trimmings, served by Store Manager Pam Ivan and Assistant Store Manager Wendy Gray.

Please join us April 6 through 12 by acknowledging the efforts of a volunteer you know. Without them, our community would be a very different place.

To Quote William Shakespeare “I can no other answer make, but THANKS AND THANKS.”
